MILWAUKEE— With October baseball just days away, Brewers fans packed the Pigsville parking lot Friday morning for the team’s Postseason Pocket Pancake Breakfast.
Manager Pat Murphy greeted fans and even flipped pancakes himself. Murphy on how fans should feel about the Brewers hopes during the playoffs.
“I think they’ll come out. I think they’re excited about this group. They understand this group. The group has proved it to them all year long that they’re special. You know, they’re not just a team that talks about it. They go out and do it, and they don’t have the same resources. We don’t have the same budget that everybody else has. They just go out and overachieve, and I think they’ll continue to do it.”
The breakfast wasn’t short on star power. Packers legend Donald Driver, former Badger and NFL fullback, Derek Watt, and Badger Alum and NFL tight end Travis Beckum joined the griddle line, serving up pancakes and syrup while mingling with fans. Donald Driver laughed as he was asked, “Pancakes.. or Waffles”.
“I have to say this. I’m big on waffles, man. So I kind of grew up on a waffle thing, so I gotta go with waffles. That’s what I grew up on. But… hey, it’s a pancake event. You gotta have fun doing pancakes. I’ve cooked them a lot. I love cooking pancakes. But if I had to choose, I gotta go waffles now,” Donald Driver tells WTMJ.
Derek Watt had a lot of excitement for this upcoming post season, and also claims to be a “chocolate chip pancake guy”.
“How can you not be feeling good about it? They’ve had such an incredible year,” Watt said. ”They just find a way to win. I think they’re going to have a great postseason run here and hopefully go all the way.”
Travis Beckum joined in on the excitement for the Brewers, while also mentioning he’s team pancake all the way.
“It would mean everything. Obviously, me being a Milwaukee native, kid. It was awesome to see the success of the Packers, a few years ago with the Bucks, and I think it’s the Brewers turn.”
Fans drove from all around the state to come support the Brewers final stretch of home games this weekend, but specifically for the Pocket Pancake celebration as well. Halen Olsen, Lucky Paul, Colson Kleinschmidt and Bob Best are all from Oshkosh area, coming to celebrate the fun event for the Brewers. Other fans are more local, like Emily Anderson and Nic Fugate from Oak Creek.
Halen, Lucky, and Colson all had been up since 3 a.m, with a long two hour drive to celebrate the Brewers.
“I’m pretty excited. Hopefully we can clinch a one seed. I think we got it,” Halen said.
“I’m pretty hyped, you know, I just got this T shirt and I’m ready to rep it, you know?” Lucky said.
“Yeah, super hyped. Got up at 3 in the morning. Actually, we didn’t even go to sleep last night. So we’re hyped to be here right now,” Colson said.
Bob Best drove down with his son Drew Best, ready for an eventful breakfast and playoff pregame.
“We were up at or on the road at 5am from Oshkosh. So yeah, something to look forward to. Something to just be part of the event. Special season for us, winning and doing things well. Pat Murphy’s got him playing fun, so. Yeah, we just want to be part of the fun,” Best said.
Oak Creek locals were just as excited about the Brewers as any other fan that attended the event. Both claimed to be team pancake all the way.
“I think Ueck is up there working some magic for us. You gotta believe in that,” Emily Anderson said.
“We know that the postseason’s a brand new season,” Nic Fugate. “The pressure’s on. And what these guys have to do is just continue to stick together, you know, rely on their friendships. They’re such a close knit, tight group. I think that’s what resulted in the magic of summer. The clutch hitting, the pitching, you know, bringing the Miz up. So, you know, if they could tap into that and just come through in those clutch situations. I mean, the sky really is the limit now.”
Whether driving from Oshkosh, stopping at the drive-thru for work, or former athletes coming to celebrate, all agreed: pancakes taste even better with playoffs on the horizon.
