MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A Milwaukee police officer is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the leg during a pursuit late Thursday on the city’s northwest side.
The 39-year-old suspect was also shot and was taken to the hospital along with the on-duty officer for treatment of non-fatal injuries.
“Our officer encountered one the suspects in the alley of the 4800 block of N. 46th Street, and gave commands to the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect refused and gunfire was exchanged between one of the suspects and our officer,” said Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman.
A 19-year-old suspect was also caught by Milwaukee police.
Milwaukee police report that two ghost-guns were recovered at the scene of the shooting.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson says that he’s disappointed that the officer was shot.
“There’s been a need for police presence in this neighborhood,” said Mayor Johnson. “The officer was going about his patrol and doing his job. I’m disappointed that he was shot but I’m more disappointed that he was shot by a man who was 39-years old. For real? A 39-year-old? You’re too damn old to be pulling something like this.”
Mayor Johnson continued on saying that it is up to older adults in the community to lookout and guide children not to make irrational decisions such as shooting at police officers.
“What’s worse, is you have a 19-year-old kid with you? While you’re doing this? You’re supposed to be a role model for this young man. You’re supposed to be teaching him how to grow up and be a responsible adult,” said Mayor Johnson. “Yet, the actions you displayed will now end you in jail for up to for I don’t know how many years. That’s the message you’re sending to kids. It just blows my mind that it has become so easily for people to now get access to guns.”
The shot officer will be on administrative leave for 30 days as he takes time to recover.
The investigation is still ongoing.
