In a year that is marked with lower traffic volume due to the pandemic, serious crash numbers are actually up.
According to WisDOT and the State Patrol, it’s the risky behavior that’s on the rise, not the volume on the roads. They’ve report 473 deadly crashes statewide this year so far.
Among the behaviors, speeding, drug and alcohol use and distracted driving making for the highest year to date numbers in the past 5 years.
WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson told our partners at TMJ 4, “We’re not at the end of the year yet, and we’ve already surpassed our total fatalities due to distracted driving that we had in the previous years.”
“Safety is a shared responsibility. Every time you get behind that wheel, you have a responsibility to the safety of everyone else on that roadway, as well as yourself,” Secretary Thompson said.
