Much like its academic counterpart, the athletics department at UW-Madison is putting workouts on hold for the next two weeks.
In a memo released Wednesday night Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said the football and men’s hockey team will both put their workouts on hold.
The announcement by the athletic department matches the edict put in place by Chancellor Rebecca Blank earlier in the day.
“Our department has, all along, aligned with Chancellor Blank on messaging to our student-athletes the important of safe behaviors and practices designed to mitigate the risk of spreading the virus,” Alvarez wrote. “I will continue to make sure our student-athletes and staff hear that message.”
Alvarez is a member of the Big Ten’s ‘return to competition’ committee tasked with gathering information regarding testing, contact tracing and other issue related to COVID-19. Last month the Big 10 pulled the plug on its fall football season, though there has been a recent push to have games start after the new year.
