An investigation is ongoing after a child injured their hand after handling a gun that fired inside a Sheboygan home Monday, March 16, 2020.
Police say officers were called to the 1400 block of South 17th Street in connection to a medical call involving a possible gunshot wound to a child.
Their preliminary investigation determined the child got access to a loaded handgun left in the house unsecured. The gun fired and the child suffered the non-life threatening injury. The child was transported to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee for treatment.
Two adults, a man and woman, were home when the gun was fired. No word of any arrests.
Police are continuing the investigation along with Child Protective Services.
In a statement, Sheboygan Police say they recognize people keep weapons in their homes, but steps must be taken to keep them out of the hands of children. They recommend the use of a trigger lock or a gun safe.
