Those who travel Highway 11 on Racine’s south side will need to plan for alternative routes with a new reconstruction project getting underway Monday.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the right lane of the highway in both directions between Lathrop and Drexel Avenues will close starting on the 17th so temporary signals can be installed.
More work will get underway on February 24 with crews performing clearing and grubbing operations, along with the removal of trees.
The project’s focus will be on the 1.3-mile stretch between Kentucky Street and Kearney Avenue, resulting in two lanes of traffic, on-street bicycle lanes and sidewalks in each direction. Project details include:
·Existing pavement structure, curb and gutter, sidewalk and storm sewer laterals
·Existing street lights will be replaced with new lights
·Existing two-way left turn lane will be replaced with a raised median
·Existing signals at Lathrop, Taylor and Drexel avenues will be replaced with new monotube signals
·Roadway will be lowered at Taylor Avenue to improve visibility through the intersection
·Existing sidewalk will be replaced in a majority of the area and new sidewalk will be added where sidewalk does not exist.
The official detour for Highway 11 will take traffic south to Chicory Road via Lathrop Avenue and Memorial Drive.
There will also be a detour of Taylor Avenue across Highway 11 using 21st Street and Lathrop.
The project is expected to be finished by late 2020.
