MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee health officials are urging residents to thoroughly cleanup if their homes were impacted by flooding.
The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) says floodwaters often contain sewage, bacteria, and chemicals that can cause serious illness. Even after the water is gone, surfaces, furniture, and household items that came into contact with floodwater may remain contaminated. These items must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, and in many cases, thrown out to prevent mold, illness, and long-term damage.
“Really cleaning in the house and in the basement as much as you can and as soon as you can, ” MHD Deputy Commissioner of Environmental Health Tyler Weber told WTMJ. “This is just a small step in offering these cleaning kits in a long road to recovery.”
Milwaukee residents can take advantage of free cleaning kits available this week at The Salvation Army Citadel Corps, located at 4129 W. Villard Ave.
