Family and friends gathering out on Lake Winnebago today for the start of Sturgeon spear fishing season. Now, cutting a big hole in some ice and patiently waiting for a fish to swim by so you can stick it with a long handled spear may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But for those on Lake Winnebago this weekend, it is much akin to opening weekend of deer hunting for some Wisconsin residents.
Mike Smith of Dick Smith’s Live Bait and Tackle says the sport is similar to hunting, “It takes a lot of waiting and a lot of patience.”
Smith says it’s like a city on the lake with so many people attending the event. Sturgeon spear season runs until February 24th or until harvest caps are reached.
