It’s the same script every year.
Hope springs eternal every autumn for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Big Ten Championship hope.
College Football Playoff hope.
The hope is well founded.
This year, hope manifested itself in the form of a bright-eyed, young Heisman candidate from Kansas.
The season always opens with an impressive win or two.
Madison puffs out its collective chest.
This is the year.
Then, it happens.
The soul-crushing loss.
In years past, it’s been Ohio State.
Last year, it was Illinois.
In 2020, it comes at the scratching claws of the Northwestern Wildcats.
An ill-timed hiccup against an inferior opponent.
Spare me about the officials.
You can’t lose that game.
Playoff hopes dashed again.
The script is the same every year.
Make no mistake, Wisconsin will go on a little run here.
They may even back into the Rose Bowl, again.
But it’s not the 90’s anymore.
Rose Bowls don’t matter.
National Titles do.
And until they re-write their own script, they’ll continue to be the same ol’ Badgers.
