Milwaukee has officially been chosen as the site of the 2020 Democratic National Convention.
“Now we better show,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett tells WTMJ. “We’re the barking dog that caught the car, now what are you going to do.”
Barrett is preparing for all eyes to be on the city from July 13-16.
“We’re going to be the focal point for the national media and in some ways the ways the world press because of the importance of the 2020 election.”
So just how much will it cost to throw this national party? Barrett says at least $60 million.
“That’s going to be a lot of work over the next year and a half. And a lot of people are involved in that. We’ve had some local people and some local institutions step up already. But this is a national event, so they’ll be a lot of national fundraising as well. What’s good for us is that a lot of that money will be spent here in our economy. So whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, you should like the fact that we’re going to have an infusion of up to $200 million into our community.”
Overall, Barrett says he is thrilled with the announcement.
“I think the city should be happy, I think the state should be happy. First time in the history of the city, first time in the history of the state that we’ve ever had something like this. It’s really cool.”
