She has five Olympic medals to her name. Now, a major American gymnastics event has her name on it, and it’s coming to Milwaukee.
The Nastia Liukin Cup will happen alongside the American Cup international gymnastics event at Fiserv Forum on March 6-7.
“I was always wanting to give back to the next generation. What can I do to give these young women the opportunity to compete on the big stage under the bright lights on national television?” she told WTMJ’s Steve Scaffidi & Carole Caine on Monday.
“We came up with that.”
Liukin, who covers the Olympic Games for NBC Sports, has helped develop the Liukin Cup into a major developmental opportunity to give gymnasts a top-level stage as they get closer to Olympic-caliber.
“The very next day, they get to watch some of their idols compete in the American Cup, which is a huge international competition and a really important step on the road to Tokyo,” said Liukin.
“You’re going to be so many of these athletes right here in Milwaukee.”
She spoke more about the event, her career and her sport on the Steve Scaffidi Show, including a discussion about how parents deal with the pressure of gymnastic events.
