Pat Murphy on the ‘layers’ of a MLB trade

Pat Murphy on Trade Deadline: ‘It pains me to change the clubhouse’

There are layers to every trade in Major League Baseball, says manager Pat Murphy. Layers that go beyond just the package of players being offered.

Despite a big push, the Crew was unable to pry pitching ace Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. Instead Skubal is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Murphy told reporters that every trade has ‘layers’ beyond the players being offered. He explained those comments when he joined WTMJ’s Wis. Morning News on Tuesday.

“Any trade has to be approved by the owner of the team,” Murphy said. “That’s the first thing. It has to do with financial implications. Every team is different. We offer a package that looks good on paper. But maybe it doesn’t look that way to the Tigers. Everybody has a different way of grading things. Ownership is involved, other players on the team are involved. There’s more to it.”

Skubal is represented by super agent Scott Boras. Do agents get involved in trades? Or do representatives try to dictate how a player is used after a trade?

“That happens all the time,” he said. “The agent is involved in the player’s health or what they think is best for the player. Ultimately the player decides. I have no idea if (the agent) was involved in this case. I know it wasn’t from our end. We didn’t have nay discussions about usage, etc.”

UECK

The Ueck documentary is scheduled to be shown at the Milwaukee Oriental Theater on Thursday. The documentary about legend Bob Uecker has been praised by fans, but not everyone is ready to see the film.

“I haven’t seen it yet,” Murph admitted. “It’s tough. You need to be in the right frame of mind (to watch it). I’m not there yet. I’m sure it’s done great.”
