MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Milwaukee County has officially launched the search for a developer to revamp the longtime home of the Milwaukee Public Museum after the museum moves to its new downtown campus.
The county has issued a request for proposals for the 3.7-acre property at 800 W. Wells Street, with developers having until October 12 to submit plans.
County officials say they’re open to a range of ideas, including complete demolition, partial demolition or adaptive reuse of the existing museum complex. The county says its looking for projects that bring new housing, commercial space and investment to the area.
The current Milwaukee Public Museum will close in early January.
The new Nature and Culture Museum of Wisconsin, now under construction near 6th Street and McKinley Avenue, is expected to open sometime in the spring of 2027.
