Festa Italiana canceled for second consecutive year

MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin is serving up a big July weekend with international festivals, outdoor concerts, Shakespeare in the park, classic cars, hot air balloons, art fairs and one especially rare gathering in Fond du Lac.

This week on The Weekend Trend, the lineup includes Festa Italiana, Bastille Days, the U.S. National Kubb Championship, Country Boom, Lifest, Death Cab for Cutie, Shakespeare in the Park, Art Fair on the Square and Archipelago 2026: A Global Savant Gathering.

Passport Picks: Italy, France, Sweden and China in Wisconsin

World Cup excitement has stirred up interest in international countries and cultures, and this weekend offers several ways to explore global traditions close to home.

Festa Italiana runs Friday through Sunday at Milwaukee’s Henry Maier Festival Park with Italian food, lots of live music and entertainment, bocce, soccer, Festa Mass, cooking demonstrations and fireworks Friday and Saturday night. The food is a major draw, from pasta and sausage to cannoli, espresso and wine.

Bastille Days runs tonight through Sunday at Cathedral Square Park downtown with free admission. Milwaukee’s French festival brings food, music, marketplace browsing and the Eiffel Tower replica for fun photo opportunities. The opening-night 40th Annual Storm the Bastille run/walk is an energetic gathering of fun seekers.

In Eau Claire, the U.S. National Kubb Championship runs Friday through Sunday at Eau Claire Soccer Park. Kubb is a Swedish lawn game sometimes described as part chess, part bowling and part backyard battle. Eau Claire is known as the Kubb Capital of North America, making this one of the weekend’s quirkiest sports stops.

The Milwaukee Dragon Boat Festival is Saturday near the South Gate Plaza at Henry Maier Festival Park. The event celebrates the Chinese tradition of dragon boat racing with colorful boats, synchronized paddling, a 10 a.m. opening Dragon Dance ceremony and cultural demonstrations including Tai Chi and Chinese square dance.

Turn It Up: Country, Christian rock, indie favorites and local music

Music fans have plenty of choices this weekend.

Country Boom continues through Saturday in West Salem, about three hours from Milwaukee. The La Crosse County country festival includes Summerfest 2026 performers Tucker Wetmore, Tyler Hubbard and Flo Rida, plus Saturday fireworks.

Lifest continues through Saturday at Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh. One of the nation’s largest Christian music festivals, Lifest combines concerts, worship, speakers, seminars and family programming. This year’s lineup includes Skillet headlining Saturday.

Death Cab for Cutie performs Saturday at Milwaukee’s Miller High Life Theatre, bringing 2000s indie-rock favorites and newer material to a seated downtown venue known for strong acoustics.

Local music legends The Gufs perform tonight at Village Park in Menomonee Falls as part of the free Falls Sunset Concert Series, while multiple WAMI-Award winners The WhiskeyBelles bring Milwaukee-area Americana, country, bluegrass and vintage harmonies to Matty’s Bar & Grille in New Berlin on Friday.

For something more unusual, Tall Tall Trees performs Friday at Cactus Club in Milwaukee and Saturday at Gibson Music Hall in Appleton. Mike Savino’s experimental banjo project uses the custom Banjotron 5000 to build psychedelic indie-folk arrangements in real time.

Curtain Up: Broadway history, ballet and Shakespeare outdoors

For theater lovers, the weekend offers American history, dance and Shakespeare under the sky.

1776: The Musical continues through Sunday at The Bend Theater in West Bend. The Tony Award-winning musical dramatizes the debates, humor and political tension behind the signing of the Declaration of Independence, making it a timely pick during America’s 250th birthday season.

Wisconsin Dance Theatre’s A Hero’s Homecoming is Saturday and Sunday at Elkhorn Area High School Auditorium. The original ballet is set at the end of World War II and blends romance, history, patriotic storytelling and live 1940s jazz.

Optimist Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park opens its season this weekend with free outdoor performances on Saturday at Wisconsin Lutheran College and Sunday at Washington Park, then a variety of Milwaukee County Parks and wrapping the season in Hartford at the Schauer Arts Center. The 2026 season includes The Merry Wives of Windsor: Falstaff’s Tale and Richard III (Puppet Edition), giving audiences both comedy and a darkly theatrical Shakespearean power grab.

Classic Wisconsin Summer: Cars, catfish, balloons and fairs

Some events simply feel like Wisconsin in July.

The Iola Car Show runs Thursday through Saturday near Stevens Point with classic vehicles, a massive swap meet, a car corral and a 2026 theme tied to America’s 250th birthday.

Trempealeau Catfish Days runs Friday through Sunday along the Mississippi River with live music, a car show, fishing tournament, cornhole, family activities, a Sunday parade and wild-caught catfish served daily.

The Taste N Glow Balloon Festival runs Friday and Saturday in the Marathon City/Wausau area with hot air balloons, food, vendors, lumberjack shows and a 9 p.m. nightly balloon glow synchronized to music.

Bristol Progress Days runs Friday through Sunday in western Kenosha County with music, food, civic pride, a 5K and hometown festival traditions. Nearby, the Bristol Renaissance Faire opens Saturday and runs weekends through Labor Day with jousting, artisans, comedy, music, costumed characters and giant turkey legs.

In Chippewa Falls, the Northern Wisconsin State Fair runs through Sunday with carnival rides, agriculture, fair food, entertainment and more than 125 years of Chippewa Valley tradition.

Feed Your Creative Side: Art fairs in Madison, Delafield and Whitefish Bay

Art lovers have three strong outdoor options.

Art Fair on the Square runs Saturday and Sunday around Madison’s Capitol Square. Presented by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, the 68th annual fair features more than 300 artists and draws nearly 100,000 people.

Lake Country Art Festival is Saturday at Naga-Waukee Park in Delafield with artists, food, music, beer, wine and a relaxed park setting.

Whitefish Bay Art Fest runs Saturday and Sunday on East Silver Spring Drive with 100 original artists, live music, free entry, free parking and family activities including a Kids Art Zone.

Super Unique: Archipelago 2026 in Fond du Lac

The most unusual event of the weekend may be Archipelago 2026: A Global Savant Gathering on Friday at the Prairie Theater and Event Center on the Fond du Lac County Campus.

Hosted by the SSM Health Treffert Center, Archipelago brings together individuals from around the world with savant syndrome. Their extraordinary abilities may appear in music, art, memory, mathematics, calendar calculation and visual thinking.

The event is part showcase, part community-building gathering and part celebration of neurodiversity, creativity and human connection.

Whether you want to eat your way through Italy, stroll through a French street festival, watch a Swedish lawn game championship, hear live music, catch Shakespeare outdoors, shop for art or experience something truly one-of-a-kind, Wisconsin is full of ways to make the most of this July weekend.
