MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Police have released body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that left a teenager injured after a shots fired call in September.
Police say the incident began when officers responded to reports of gunshots near 15th Street and Greenfield Avenue around 9:21 p.m. on Sept. 30. Residents directed officers to a group of people on dirt bikes who were leaving the area, and officers followed the group into an alley near 7th Street and Scott Street.
In the alley, police say a person wearing a mask and carrying a rifle left his dirt bike and began running. The body camera footage shows two officers chase after the suspect and shout commands to drop the rifle.
“The suspect disregarded these commands, and the officer discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect. A rifle was recovered next to the suspect,” Milwaukee Police said in a statement.
17-year-old Jouthem Rodriguez Lacourt was struck in the legs by the officer’s gun. He was taken to a hospital for non-fatal injuries.
Court records show Rodriguez Lacourt has been charged with one felony of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and two misdemeanors of possessing a dangerous weapon as a person under 18 and resisting an officer.
Police say the officer who fired his gun is a 26-year-old man with over three years of service. He was placed on administrative duty.
