MILWAUKEE — Flock Safety cameras are officially leaving the Milwaukee County Parks system.
Supervisors on the Milwaukee County Board voted unanimously to remove the automated license plate readers and replace them with conventional security cameras on Oct. 1.
The decision comes amid public outcry over privacy concerns and misuse of the technology by Milwaukee Police Department officers.
Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office defended the technology during a committee meeting on Tuesday, saying the cameras have helped with criminal investigations and pointing to recent policy changes implemented by the sheriff’s office and Milwaukee police.
Flock cameras must be removed from the 11 county parks where they are currently deployed by the end of the year. Separate legislation will determine what replaces them and how new cameras will be paid for.
Future funding for a renewed contract with Flock Safety is absent from Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley’s latest budget proposal for 2027.
