WAUKESHA, Wis. — A nearly 10-mile stretch of I-43 in southeast Wisconsin is getting a major overhaul beginning this fall.
Governor Tony Evers has approved a $68.1 million pavement replacement and improvement project along the I-43 Rock Freeway between Highway 83 and Bowers Road in Waukesha and Walworth counties.
Preparation work is scheduled to begin the week of October 5, including temporary emergency pullouts and widening of lanes and ramps. Drivers should expect some overnight lane and ramp closures during that work.
Major construction will begin in spring 2027 and include replacing the pavement and ramps throughout the 9.8-mile project area. Crews will also make improvements to bridges and retaining walls, repair or replace culverts and install new guardrails, signs and pavement markings.
I-43 will remain open in both directions throughout the project, with traffic shifted through staged construction and crossovers.
Temporary ramp closures and some local road closures will be necessary, with detours posted. Access to businesses and homes will be maintained.
The entire project is expected to be completed in 2029, weather permitting.
