WATERTOWN, Wis.– The Watertown Unified School District’s interim superintendent has banned high school from performing the musical “Flashdance” for their Spring production.
The musical from the 80’s is about a welder with dreams to become a professional dancer.
The movie is Rated R, but the stage production is PG-13, which was reviewed by the school board.
“We’re moving forward with looking for another high-quality, family-friendly play that everybody can enjoy,” says Interim Superintendent James Feil.
Feil says he was not included in the selection process originally, but does not believe that the music teacher or principal did anything wrong.
The move comes after the Watertown High School’s wind symphony was banned from performing “A Mother of a Revolution,” an instrumental piece with heavy LGBTQ+ themes, for their spring concert last year.
Feil has served as the district’s interim superintendent since August 1, since Dr. Jared Burke resigned in June.
“I did some research. I did a little bit more even after making the decision. But essentially, it was my call to say you know, there are too many other things to select. I want you to go back and find a different play,” says Feil. “It was a judgment call.”
WTMJ reached out the school’s principal who did not wish to comment.
