MADISON, Wis. — The Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity has suspended programming at its Madison-based chapter after pledges were found covered in condiments and food in an 80-degree basement during a hazing investigation.
The fraternity issued a cease and desist to its Madison chapter on Friday, prohibiting all new member meetings, social events, philanthropy events, chapter social media activity and other chapter gatherings.
“AEPi has urged members to cooperate fully with the investigation, which will inform recommendations to the fraternity’s Supreme Board of Governors for further actions impacting the chapter and/or individual members,” part of a statement read.
The Madison chapter’s president and vice president were arrested on Sept. 23 after Madison Police received an anonymous tip for hazing activity at a house on Langdon Street. Police found about 30 men partially clothed and covered in food, some with “visible injuries consistent with being physically assaulted.”
AEPi said in a statement to WTMJ that it is taking the allegations seriously and fully cooperating with the investigation:
“We will also work with the university in hopes that they will take action against individual perpetrators for violation of the student code of conduct.”
According to UW-Madison, AEPi’s affiliation with the university was terminated in 2015 after it violated terms of suspension related to underage drinking at a house party that sent to a 17-year-old to the hospital. The Madison AEPi chapter has been allowed to continue operating as an unaffiliated student organization because it is recognized by its national organization.
Any students found to have violated the law or university policy could face written reprimand, disciplinary probation, disciplinary suspension, expulsion or other educational sanctions.
