MILWAUKEE — Today is National Voter Registration day.

The Milwaukee County Election Commission is holding events throughout the city to help residents register to vote, check their registration, and answer questions about the voting process.

The County uses the “My Vote” system, which can check registration status, provide the location of the nearest polling place, and show absentee voting options.

“We recognize that not everybody has the technology or the resources to be able to check their registration status or be able to register to vote,” says Milwaukee County Elections Director Michelle Hawley. “We just encourage people to start thinking about their plan.”

The My Vote system also provides a sample ballot, so people can see who the candidates are and be prepared for what the ballot will look like on election day.

“Registration’s the first step. Verify that, get registered, and then research your candidates. We certainly don’t provide that service for you. We’re a nonpartisan agency. But go out there and see who is in line with your values and your thoughts,” says Hawley. “In addition, be ready for election day. Get a plan. What’s your transportation plan look like? And make sure that you bring your photo ID for election day.”

Hawley says a proof of residence is necessary for registering or updating registration.

There will be two more voting registration events this week. The first is Wednesday, September 16, at the Milwaukee County Veterans Service Office.

The second is Thursday, September 17, at the Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center.

Both are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Election day is November 3.
