BROWN COUNTY, Wis.– A horse in Brown County in northeast Wisconsin has tested positive for West Nile Virus.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection confirms that an unvaccinated six-year-old Quarter Horse mare is the state’s first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in a horse this year.
The virus is spread through an infected mosquito bite and can cause brain inflammation in horses and people.
The threats for West Nile Virus are highest in the summer when mosquitos are most active.
No humans have currently contracted the virus in Wisconsin.
