MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee bar on Brady Street that closed amid backlash over a “no-play list” is poised to reopen in October under new management.

“The Garage” closed last week when a list of musicians that DJs were not allowed to play, including Black artists and Milwaukee rappers, went viral online. Bar owner Leslie Montemurro has since apologized to the community but denied that the list was a directive from ownership.

Montemurro said she was already in the process of selling The Garage and her other bar Hi Hat Lounge to Scott Schaefer, the owner of Jack’s American Pub on Brady Street and Milwaukee Brat House on MLK Drive, in August. The controversy prompted the deal to move forward quickly.

The Garage posted on social media a tentative grand reopening date of Oct. 15.

“We’re in the process of making some changes. Stay tuned for updates to come!” a post read on Instagram.

The post included a logo for the “Hi Hat on Brady,” but it’s unclear if the second bar is also slated to re-open in October.
