Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee welcome Class of 2030 during move-in day

MILWAUKEE— Marquette University and UW-Milwaukee is welcoming thousands of students to their respective campuses as the Class of 2030 moves into residence halls ahead of the new academic year.

Move-in for the new Golden Eagles began Wednesday morning on August 26, with students arriving at residence halls across campus. Media availability was held at The Commons, where students and families could be seen settling into their new homes.

Marquette says students are moving into nine residence halls across campus. The freshmen class at Marquette University has about 2,100 students, from 43 states, over 14 countries and over 200 first generation college students, according to Mary Janz, Marquette’s senior director of Housing and Residence Life.

Ben Schill from De Pere, Wisconsin, dropped off his daughter Macy and gave some parent advice to all parents and students entering their first year.

“Realize that there’s really good people, there’s really good families on this campus and your son or daughter is going to end up surrounded by really good people and everything will be fine,” he said. “She got advice for about two hours on the way down in the car. I think the main thing is find your tribe, find your people. You’ll know it when you meet them. Take your time. The people you surround yourself with are really going to make the next four years and beyond awesome.”

Macy is going into Nursing at Marquette University.

Kate Thorne, a new student athlete from the Madison area, will be taking on the athlete life while also focusing on her business major in the long run.

“I’m playing tennis here, so probably just meeting everybody on the team and just the experience. Experience of playing a college sport and all that comes with that,” she said. “It’s gonna be a lot for sure. I know that. But, doing what I can to be prepared.”

Her mom Jenny Thorne gave some advice to her daughter while moving into the dorms.

“Get enough sleep, have fun, be open to meeting new people. Call your mom once in a while,” she said. “Everybody seems very welcoming, I’m a badger, so just comparing it to that. But everybody seems very welcoming and helpful, which I really appreciate.”

The university’s first day of classes for undergraduate students is Monday, August 31.

At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, students began moving in on Thursday.

“We make sure that there’s moments for engagement throughout this time of move-in so that they do feel like they’re making connections,” says Director of University Housing Arcetta Clay-Jones. “This is exciting, interacting with the students and their families. The idea of newness and excitement, but also ’oh, I’m not sure what’s next,’ which is good.”

UWM has students from 27 countries moving into the main residence halls this weekend, which include Sandburg, Cambridge, Kenilworth, and Riverview.
