ITHACA, Wis. — The Ithaca School District is mourning the death of a student after a farming accident on Thursday.
High school freshman Briggs Maxwell was seriously hurt by a skid loader shortly after 7 a.m. on Aug. 27 in the Town of Ithaca. The Richland County Sheriff’s Office said he died from a head injury.
Maxwell played as a running back and linebacker on the high school varsity football team, and his father is an assistant coach.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved them during this incredibly difficult time,” the Ithaca School District said in a statement. “This is a time for our school community to come together, support one another, and give one another grace.”
Counselors and school personnel are available at the district’s gymnasium and classrooms for students and staff who need support.
The school district has cancelled all athletic activities for Thursday night and Friday, including the Ithaca/Weston Varsity Football game at Weston against Wauzeka-Steuben on Friday night. Ithaca Varsity Volleyball on Saturday is also cancelled.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
