SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis.– A teen accused of killing his grandmother has been found competent to stand trial.
Now 16-year-old Edward Barbara was just 15-years-old when his 68-year-old grandmother Elizabeth Totsky was found unresponsive in her South Milwaukee home.
Barbara told police the pair had been cooking when she had a seizure. Despite receiving medical care, Totsky died four days later in the hospital.
According to a criminal complaint, injuries to Totsky’s neck suggested she had been strangled.
The teen eventually admitted to strangling his grandmother for 5 minutes before she became unconscious.
He was initially found not competent for trial, but the ruling was reversed on Wednesday.
Barbara is charged with 1st degree intentional homicide. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
