MILWAUKEE — An original Pablo Picasso that was stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery over eight years ago was turned in to police on Wednesday.
The artwork is a Picasso etching print, “Torero,” from 1949. Milwaukee Police say a community member recognized the print and turned it in to District 4 on Aug. 5.
“Torero” was stolen from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals on Jefferson St. in February 2018. The company’s owner estimated the value of the artwork between $35,000 and $50,000, and offered a $5,000 reward for its return.
MPD says an authenticator confirmed the artwork was the stolen print. Investigators are working on locating the rightful owner.
“The Milwaukee Police Department is grateful that this community member recognized the etching print and did the right thing and returned it,” MPD said in a statement. “We are better together.”
