MADISON, Wis. — A man is dead and two officers are injured after a police shooting involving a suspect armed with a knife on Madison’s east side.
According to the Madison Police Department, an officer shot the man near Baldwin and Williamson around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.
According to Madison Police Chief John Patterson, officers responded to reports of a man stealing bicycles and checking car doors. The man fled from police on a bicycle.
Police pursued the man and attempted to arrest him after he fell from his bike at the intersection of Baldwin and Williamson. According to police, it is unclear whether he fell on his own or if officers pulled him off the bike.
Patterson said four officers struggled to arrest the man after he pulled out a large fixed-blade knife and injured an officer in the middle of the intersection.
The Madison Police Department says officers unsuccessfully tased the man, and then the male officer who was injured by the knife fired shots.
The man was transported for life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital. He has not been identified, but police confirm he was in his 30s.
A second officer was injured, but it is unclear how and when it happened.
The officer who was injured by the knife and fired shots is a veteran of the Madison police force. Four officers have been placed on administrative leave.
The Department of Criminal Investigations is reviewing the shooting.
