SULLIVAN, Wis. — Wisconsin has already experienced one of its busiest tornado years on record, according to the National Weather Service.
As of July 13, the state has recorded 39 confirmed tornadoes in 2026. That ties 2025 for the sixth-highest annual total since modern records began in 1950, with several months of severe weather season still remaining.
The state averages about 23 tornadoes in a typical year.
Of the 39 tornadoes confirmed so far this year, 20 were rated EF-1, 13 were EF-0, two were EF-2, and three were EF-3. One tornado remains unrated.
The busiest stretch came during a widespread severe weather outbreak in April, when 27 tornadoes were confirmed across Wisconsin.
The most active tornado years on record remain 2005 with 62 tornadoes, followed by 2010 (46), 2024 (45), 1980 (43), and 2021 (41).
