MADISON, Wis. — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Sara Rodriguez has fired her campaign manager after her campaign says it discovered serious problems with its campaign finance reports.
In a statement released Sunday night, the Rodriguez campaign announced it had terminated campaign manager Kara Spencer after an internal review uncovered what it described as “serious mismanagement and inaccuracies” in campaign finance filings.
The campaign said an initial review found that Spencer submitted inaccurate and incomplete campaign finance reports.
Rodriguez said she acted immediately after learning of the issues.
“The moment Sara learned of these inaccuracies, she acted swiftly and decisively removed her,” the campaign said in a statement.
Campaign officials said they will contact the Wisconsin Ethics Commission on Monday to correct the reporting errors and ensure the filings are brought into compliance.
The campaign did not specify the nature of the inaccuracies or whether any money is missing. It also did not indicate when the reporting errors occurred.
The shakeup comes less than a month before Wisconsin’s Aug. 11 Democratic gubernatorial primary, where Rodriguez is seeking her party’s nomination.
Despite the leadership change, the campaign said it remains focused on the race ahead.
“The campaign will continue to build support to win in August and beat Tom Tiffany in November,” the statement said.
