CALEDONIA, WI – It was a quiet Tuesday morning when Brianna Lock looked out her window and saw two horses trotting through her backyard. She was able to capture the carefree duo with her phone. They had escaped from their enclosure and were on the run.
Locke was unaware that Caledonia police had been called to assist in the capture of the horses. As they tried to corral them, they began running west on train tracks. Although police had contacted train companies asking for trains to be stopped until the horses could be guided away from the tracks, a northbound Amtrak train struck the brown horse. That horse was later put down by a local veterinarian. The white horse survived.
The Caledonia police department, in a statement, confirmed the incident, noting that the second horse was uninjured and the train operation was not affected. No additional details were released beyond the facts of the event.
Here’s the video of the horses before the accident.
