WAUWATOSA, Wis.– The Wauwatosa Fire Department has named Barbara Kadrich as the first female chief to lead the department.
Kadrich will be chief until the department merges with the West Allis Fire Department early next year to create the Milwaukee Metro Fire Department.
According to a statement from the city of Wauwatosa, Kadrich brings 30 years of experience in the fire service.
“We will be doing a national search for the fire chief of Milwaukee Metro Fire Rescue, to which she is welcome to apply,” says Communications Manager Eva Ennamorato.
The goal is to hire a new fire chief for the merged department by this fall.
Kadrich issued the following statement:
“I am honored to serve in this role and proud to lead such an exceptional fire department.
Wauwatosa Fire has always set a high standard, and I still remember walking through the
doors of the old Station 1 on my first day – it shaped who I am today. Being one of the first
women hired and now in this role is meaningful, and I’ve been fortunate to have strong
support from those around me who recognize the value of leadership, built on experience,
commitment, and trust.
I am here because of the unwavering support of my husband, Al, and my two sons, Hunter
and Max, along with the mentorship and guidance I’ve received from incredible people both
within the fire service and beyond (many people to thank).
I am committed to maintaining the highest level of service to our community while
continuing to build a department our members are proud to be part of. As we move through
this transition and toward a merged department, we will stay focused, forward-thinking, and
united in creating something even stronger for the future.”
She may be the first female fire chief to serve in Milwaukee County, a milestone the city says they are still working to verify.
