WAUKESHA, Wis. — A former Wauwatosa police officer who was involved in three separate shootings that killed three people is ending his career in law enforcement.
Joseph Mensah resigned from the Wauwatosa Police Department in 2020 and was hired at the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.
On Thursday, Mensah submitted his resignation letter to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, saying “I feel it would be in the best interest of the Sheriff’s Department, the community, my family, and my own personal well-being, that I transition out of the law enforcement profession.”
During his time as an officer with the Wauwatosa Police Department, Mensah was involved in three officer-involved shootings that killed Antonio Gonzales in 2015, Jay Anderson Jr. in 2016 and Alvin Cole in 2020. He was never charged in any of the shooting deaths.
Mensah’s final day with the sheriff’s department will be July 31, according to the resignation letter.
