WASHINGTON — Those outside the U.S. Capitol say there was little warning protesters would breach the building.
Witnesses say it’s hard to pinpoint when exactly the mood shifted.
“There wasn’t a lot of animosity,” said James Middlebrook, who was on the ground when the breach occurred. “It wasn’t until there were huge, huge crowds that it seemed to have turned very aggressive.”
He says there didn’t appear to be any dueling protests between groups.
“People were just talking about politics, talking about defending President Trump and then as more of the crowd came together, that’s when things started heating up,” Middlebrook said. “People started pushing through barricades and all the way up to the steps of the Capitol.”
