As the country remembers its fallen military members this weekend, a display in Greenfield is focusing on those lost in Vietnam.
The Vietnam Moving Wall is a scaled down replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. It’ll be on display 24/7 at Greenfield’s Konkel Park through Memorial Day at 4 p.m.
“Where it’s located, whether it’s the traveling wall or the original wall, it doesn’t make any difference to me,” said Master Sgt. Larry Elliott, a Vietnam veteran. “To show respect to all those Vietnam veterans who served with me, those who came home and those who didn’t come home, I had to honor them and it was important to me that I do that.”
It took about three years to bring the traveling memorial to Greenfield, but those who worked on bringing it to the city say it’s well worth it.
“Everybody it seems knows somebody on the wall,” said First Lt. Ruby Scheuing, who served in the Army as a post-op nurse in Vietnam. “I think it gives you a little bit of closure if you come can come here and see the name of this person. You don’t understand any better, but maybe you feel better that at least you’ve seen that name.”
An opening ceremony for the Moving Wall begins Friday at 1 p.m. There will also be a closing ceremony Monday, May 27 at 11 a.m.
