Wisconsin is making a renewed push to attract film and TV productions with the return of a state film office and a new $5 million tax incentive program. The initiative offers filmmakers up to 30 percent back on eligible in-state spending, putting Wisconsin back in the conversation with states that already compete for production dollars.
Filmmaker Nathan Deming joined Wisconsin’s Midday News to discuss what the changes mean for the state’s creative industry. The Wisconsin native and founder of Nobody Pictures said the lack of incentives once made it difficult for filmmakers to build careers here, often forcing them to leave the state.
The new program is designed to keep money in Wisconsin by covering only in-state crews and vendors. Deming called it a smart first step that could help retain young creatives and bring more film and TV projects to communities across the state.
