Former President Barack Obama is throwing his support behind Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as Wisconsin’s race for governor enters its final weeks.
Obama announced his endorsement Thursday, Oct. 8, in a video released by Crowley’s campaign, highlighting Crowley’s personal story, his work as Milwaukee County executive and similarities between the two Democrats.
For Crowley, the Obama endorsement provides a high-profile national voice reinforcing several themes his campaign is already emphasizing: affordability, personal resilience and his ability to work with others.
Whether the endorsement changes voters’ opinions remains to be seen. But with Wisconsin’s governor’s race remaining competitive, both campaigns are increasingly focused on the relatively small group of independent and persuadable voters who could ultimately decide the election.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
