Wisconsin’s Democratic senator said Thursday she would be willing to take on the role of Vice President if presumptive candidate Joe Biden asked her to be his running mate.
Senator Tammy Baldwin says she wants to help Biden “in any way I can” in an effort to defeat President Donald Trump in the November general election.
“Joe Biden has his own process, things he’s evaluating. Gotta suspect he’s looking to a very strong relationship with President Obama…and is certainly weighing all sorts of factors,” Senator Baldwin told ABC’s “The View” Thursday. “When Joe Biden announces his running mate in, likely the beginning of August, it will be a historic choice.”
That choice could be Baldwin, who would become the first openly gay member of a presidential ticket. Or it could be a woman of color, which would again be a first for a presidential or vice presidential candidate.
Baldwin’s appearances comes on a day when President Trump makes a pair of appearances in Wisconsin, and two days after Vice President Mike Pence appeared in Pewaukee and Waukesha for a pair of events.
During her appearance this morning, Baldwin said she believes the 2018 mid-term election showed a shift in Wisconsin politics. Baldwin retained her Senate seat while Democratic Governor Tony Evers won his race against 8-year Republican incumbent Scott Walker.
“We know the path to the presidency goes right through the state of Wisconsin…must-wins if Joe Biden is to become our next president,” Baldwin said. “The Biden campaign is off to a great start and really seizing the lessons we learned in 2018.”
That campaign will include a very big appearance in August at a scaled-down Democratic National Convention at Milwaukee’s Wisconsin Center, a convention that will include delegates staying at home and virtually attending events such as Biden’s acceptance speech.
Baldwin believes the DNC’s move shows a “contrast in leadership,” as the Republican National Convention will happen mainly with in-person events in Jacksonville, Florida where there will be a greater danger of contracting COVID-19.
“We have a President of the United States who is talking about reducing testing,” said Senator Baldwin. “He is pretending the pandemic is behind us, but yesterday we set the record for positive COVID-19 test results.”
