FAYETTE COUNTY, Pa. — A woman from southeast Wisconsin is dead after becoming trapped in a landslide while biking on a trail in western Pennsylvania.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office tells WTMJ 79-year-old Gail Luck of Germantown and her husband were riding along the popular Great Allegheny Passage through Ohiopyle State Park October 17 when the pair became trapped under a large rock. Luck died at the scene, said the coroner’s office, while her husband was also seriously injured but is expected to recover.
“We are absolutely devastated,” said the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy in a statement. “Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the bicyclist who lost her life, and extend our hopes for recovery to the bicyclist who was injured.”
The mayor of nearby Connellsville Greg Lincoln called the incident a “terrible accident” in a Facebook post the same day.
“The couple and their family are in the thoughts and prayers of my family and everyone in Connellsville. I would like to thank the first responders and everyone who responded to this accident to help,” said Lincoln.
About a million people travel along the Great Allegheny Passage every year, which earlier this year was partially closed to address ongoing landslide concerns.
The area near the latest landslide is closed until further notice, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
