MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin drivers are waking up to another sharp increase at the pump, with the statewide average price of gasoline jumping more than 20 cents overnight.
According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Wisconsin reached $4.34 Thursday, up from about $4.11 Wednesday. A week ago, the statewide average was about $4.01.
In the Milwaukee-Waukesha area, regular gas jumped from about $4.04 Wednesday to $4.29 Thursday, an overnight increase of nearly 25 cents. That’s also about 35 cents higher than one week ago.
Prices have been climbing nationally as well. AAA attributes the broader increase to rising crude oil prices amid the ongoing war with Iran and continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, which pushed crude back toward the $100-per-barrel range.
Wisconsin drivers are now paying significantly more than they were a year ago. AAA says the statewide average on this date last year was about $2.89 a gallon.
Diesel prices have also reached record territory. Wisconsin’s statewide diesel average stands at about $6.19 a gallon, which AAA lists as a new record high for the state.
