MADISON, Wis. — Governor Tony Evers has formally requested a disaster declaration from President Trump after severe storms in the Fox Valley last month.
A damage assessment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Wisconsin Emergency Management found nearly $14 million in damage to public infrastructure and another $8.2 million to residential properties across Winnebago, Outagamie, Vilas and Forest counties.
The severe storms on July 27 included an EF-3 tornado in Menasha and Appleton that prompted Evers to declare a state of emergency and activate the Wisconsin National Guard.
“Wisconsin has been hit especially hard by severe weather over the last few years, and we cannot afford for the federal government not to step up to the plate and get states like ours help when we need it,” Evers said in a news release.
The July 27 storms were the second round of severe weather in Wisconsin over the summer alone, and followed the Trump Administration’s partial denial of FEMA assistance for damages caused by severe storms in April. Gov. Evers announced that Wisconsin is filing an appeal in that decision.
Wisconsin’s latest disaster declaration request now awaits approval from President Trump.
