FOND DU LAC COUNTY, Wis. — A toddler died from a gunshot wound after their sibling got hold of a loaded gun on Friday.
It happened just before 10:30 a.m. on April 10 inside a vehicle parked in a residential driveway.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said a parent placed their three young children inside the car, then briefly went back inside the home to get something they forgot.
While the parent was gone, a four-year-old found a loaded gun in the center consol. The gun discharged and struck a two-year-old.
First responders including a medical helicopter were called to the scene, but the two-year-old died at the scene despite life-saving efforts.
No one else was injured, and the sheriff’s office said the family involved is cooperating. It’s not yet clear if criminal charges will be filed.
The sheriff’s office is reminding residents to safely store firearms out of the reach of children at all times.
