OSHKOSH, Wis.— A 17-year-old was injured and a suspect is in custody following a shooting near the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus Saturday night.
According to Oshkosh police, officers were called to the area of McKinley Avenue and John Street just after 7 p.m. for reports of gunfire. Officers were already nearby monitoring an unsanctioned pub crawl when they heard the shots.
The 17-year-old victim, an Oshkosh resident, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police, along with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and UW-Oshkosh police, launched a large search for the suspect. Authorities used K-9 units and a drone as they worked to locate the person involved.
Around 7:50 p.m., officers spotted a suspect attempting to leave the area in a vehicle. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted near Jackson Street and Irving Avenue, where a 23-year-old man from Omro was taken into custody without incident.
Police say there is no ongoing threat to the campus or surrounding community.
The investigation remains ongoing, and charges against the suspect are pending.
