MILWAUKEE — As temperatures begin to drop and winter approaches, warming centers are available across the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County.
“I want every person – particularly our most vulnerable residents – to have a safe and warm place out of the elements during our cold months,” said Mayor Cavalier Johnson.
Last year, warming centers in the area assisted over 1,516 individuals, including men, women, and children, which was a 36% increase.
Warming season efforts typically include expanded shelter hours, additional warming center locations, increased street outreach, and transportation support.
This year, the coalition has established a proactive prevention strategy to quickly connect people experiencing homelessness for the first time with rapid-attachment services, reducing the need for them to lean on warming shelters.
“Funding cuts and this year’s flooding left more residents displaced, so by implementing this prevention strategy, we’re working proactively to connect people to long-term housing and minimize the strain on warming shelters,” according to a news release.
