RACINE, Wis. — A newborn was safely surrendered in a baby box at a fire station in Racine.
The baby girl was found at Racine Fire Station Four earlier this month — the first time an infant has been surrendered in a Safe Haven Baby Box in Wisconsin.
Racine Fire Department said the newborn was found in good health and immediately cared for by first responders. The newborn was taken to the hospital and is now in the custody of Racine County Child Protective Services and on her way to adoption.
The baby box in Racine was installed in December.
Baby boxes are temperature-controlled spaces that allow for babies under 72 hours old to be surrendered legally and anonymously. Under a Wisconsin law signed in 2023, baby boxes can be installed at hospitals, fire stations and law enforcement buildings.
Wisconsin has six other baby boxes — in Howard, Elkhorn, Whitewater, Salem Lakes, Watertown and Reedsburg.
