MILWAUKEE- Budget cuts and buyouts are not an uncommon sight in higher education across Wisconsin and now it’s UW-Milwaukee’s turn to cut costs.
According to the Journal-Sentinel, UWM Chancellor Mark Mone offered voluntary buyouts to university employees on Monday.
In a note to students and staff, Mone said the school’s fall enrollment numbers were down 4%, resulting in a loss of about $7-million in tuition revenue for the year.
Last fall, Marquette University announced plans to trim its staff by 2.5%. UW System schools UW-Whitewater, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-Stevens Point have all dealt with buyouts, budget cuts, and a loss of faculty positions in recent years.
UW System schools haven’t raised tuition for in-state students since 2013 after former Governor Scott Walker instituted a tuition freeze. The freeze was extended by lawmakers in the biennial budget signed by Governor Tony Evers last year. The freeze will remain in place through at least next year.
Mone says UW-Milwaukee will accept applications for the voluntary buyout through May 1st.
