Cheeses from around the world are sent to Madison by the tons with hopes to be crowned the best in the world.
A team of 55 judges only scratch the surface when they feel, smell and taste the countless cheeses submitted to the 2020 World Championship Cheese Contest.
“We don’t throw any away,” said Wisconsin Cheese Maker Association Executive Director John Umhoefer. “A lot of its donated. Many that are ready for retail–we have string cheese that’s never opened because they send way too much–that goes to Second Harvest food pantry.”
In total, competitors will donate more than 7,000 pounds of cheese.
Umhoefer says some cheese is sold for retail to stores all across Wisconsin.
