Now in its third year, the Bucks Gaming team continues to capitalize on the rising popularity of eSports.
Bucks Gaming competes in the NBA’s 2K League, which has $1.4 million in prize money up for grabs.
“The prize pool keeps growing, obviously viewership and interest keeps growing,” said Bucks Gaming General Manager Andrew Buck. “Players are getting better at getting on social media and being more accessible to the fans, which is huge because that’s what eSports is all about.”
The team is returning two of its players from last year’s team, including Aaron Rookwood, who goes by ‘ARooks.’ He earned All-NBA 2K League First Team honors in 2019.
“We get stopped in airports when we’re traveling,” ARooks said about the rise in popularity. “It’s getting only bigger now, day-by-day, month-by-month and year-by-year.”
Gaming has become a billion dollar industry and has exploded in popularity in high schools across the state.
“The next step for us is how can we cultivate a bigger community,” Buck said. “We think this is a great platform to bring together people.”
The team gets its season started March 24 with THE TIPOFF tournament.
