MADISON – Governor Tony Evers has said any anti-LGBTQ bill that reached his desk would be dead on arrival.
That statement held serve this morning, when the Governor exercised his veto power on an Assembly bill that would have banned gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth.
The bill, authored by Representative Scott Allen (R) of Waukesha, had passed earlier this year by Republican members of the Legislature.
The veto is the latest in a string of bill denials from Evers, who last month nixed a two billion dollar Republican tax cut bill that he dubbed “completely unserious”.
In terms of what the future of the bill could look like, the Assembly could still override Evers’s veto. The state constitution says lawmakers only need support from two-thirds of members who are present on a given day — not two-thirds of all Assembly members.
