The city of Milwaukee is working towards making sure building development in one area has an impact in communities throughout the city.
Milwaukee Commissioner of City Development Lafayette Crump was a guest on WTMJ 2021. He said the city is working to make sure that when a building goes up, several communities are built up alongside it.
“There are a lot of folks throughout the city with diverse backgrounds who have had a chance to work on some of those projects, to own companies that have gotten contracts on some of those projects,” Crump said.
“And what we really want to do is get into a space where more and more people throughout the city, people of color, people from diverse backgrounds, are able to lead those projects and are able to see that development throughout all areas of the city.”
“When you are able to ensure that people from all over the city, from all different backgrounds, are truly involved in building up a place and have a real sense of ownership in that space, then the space becomes even more meaningful to them,” Crump said.
“And I think the more that we have people feeling that sense of ownership and a real sense of belonging in the place where they are, that has such an even broader impact than simply putting up buildings.”
