MADISON — The Universities of Wisconsin are considering a policy to make all core general education courses seamlessly transferable between all 13 UW schools.
The policy would guarantee that core general education credits earned at one UW university will transfer and apply towards graduation requirements at another UW university. Although credits for core classes already do transfer across the system, the requirements vary at each university.
Core general education requirements would range from 30 to 36 credits in 10 to 12 courses from six curricular categories at all the universities.
“The success of our students is paramount,” Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman said. “Nothing should keep students from pursuing their dreams, and this policy puts students first.”
The policy would reaffirm the transferability of credits from dual enrollment opportunities in high school and strengthen the transferability of credits from the Wisconsin Technical College System.
The Board of Regents is now looking for comment on the policy at UW schools. If the board approves the policy, it would go into effect for undergraduate students who first enroll in fall 2026.
The effort to smooth out credit transfers is mandated by the biennial state budget.
